June 21st is Make Music Day!

June 21st is Make Music Day!

It started in France in 1982 but now it’s an international event where communities get together to share music with others for free! If it’s music and it’s free, I’M THERE. I particularly love the date because it also marks the beginning of Summer here, so you have the longest day of the year to enjoy as much music as you can.

Make Music Day is open to anyone anywhere willing to participate. Most regions will invite musicians, bands, or ensembles to perform at a volunteer venue, park, or an area open to the public. It’s a family-friendly event so you might even be able to take the kids to go learn and play instruments. It takes place in at least 1,000 cities in 120 countries. Honestly, the goal of this day is to go and share your music with others, enjoy other people’s musicmaking or just be a party of one and enjoy your own. The best resource to find locations where people are making music is to head to MakeMusicDay.org, and from there you can narrow it down to region to see listings of who is playing and where. There’s even a listing called “Mass Appeal” that lists locations where musicians of all levels and ages can make music in large, single-instrument groups. Who’s down for a ukulele parade?! It exists.

If your region isn’t listed there, maybe it’s time to take initiative and start your own Make Music Day in your community! Or if your area has an arts council, ask them if they’d like help planning next year’s event.

If you’d like to connect with others, #makemusicday is absolutely a hashtag you should use on social media.

They’ve also created a #MakeMusicWinter for December 21st, if you want to do it again.

I’m really excited for this, you guys! Sorry if this post sounded like one big ad. This was completely un-paid and just typed out with extreme enthusiasm for a whole day made for music.

P.S. If you’re in the Southern Rhode Island area over the following weekend, there is the Harmony Trail reveal in downtown Westerly and Summer Pops (i’m in it!)!
